The Webb Library : during the day it is bright and cheerful, just like any another library, a warm and friendly place to read and study…. After hours the lights are turned off, the doors locked , and the staff goes home, but there is evidence not all have left the premises for the night. Formally the Wade home and garden stood on this quiet street corner. The old cellar and coal storage was used as the foundation in the Webb Library building. The Webb building circa 1930’s was originally erected as business offices. On The first floor were two busy physicians, their waiting rooms, exam rooms , offices and possibly a small laboratory. Later Hospice had offices there. The second floor held offices and at one time a garment company. Over the years tenants have come and gone , weddings , meetings , bridge tournaments and recitals have filled the rooms with music and celebration. Today the rooms are filled with collectors editions and classics. No longer the center of social gatherings, there is only the hushed laughter from the children’s section and quiet whispers of those who come to read. Port City Paranormal , accompanied by Sandy Bell, Webb Library Director, came to investigate who or what still roams the halls each night. Who makes the noises and throws the art books? Is there a spirit who has remained to protect the building, to wait for the doctor, or just a lost soul unable to find their reward? Are strangers welcome to the library at night, or just endured ? Library patrons are always welcome, but investigators, that seems to be another matter. Strange happenings have been reported at the Webb over the the years. The staff has had many personal experiences- lights turning on by themselves, footsteps, and bangs and bumps in the night . Stories include ghostly apparitions of an old fisherman and the physical destruction of books, audio and video equipment. The mystery of the Webb Library deepens as our teams explored the building and its history. Sounds of whispers and footsteps, that feeling of being watched ,is often described but no one has felt threatened. After finding several books lying on the floor one morning . Sandy, mustered her courage one day and shouted: “I don’t care what you do, just don’t damage the books!” Then there was that smell that permeated the entire building with a death like stench. An odor so foul the library was closed to allow workers to locate the source . The cause of the horrible emanation was never found, it came as mysteriously as it went. During our investigation, we asked if a spirit had caused the stink, maybe as a sign of disapproval. Then we asked, “What do you disapprove of ? “The Answer was quite clear : “YOU!” Three paranormal research teams have come together to share their teams’ experiences and evidence as a joint measure to explain the activity. We have no doubt that the Webb is haunted, the question is by who ? The Evidence: Haunted North Carolina (HNC) was one of the first teams to investigate the Webb. They captured no photographic evidence, but their team reported several personal experiences and captured possible electronic voice phenomena (EVP). Comparisons of HNC investigation with subsequent vigils, show that the spirits have become bolder, and the activity has apparently increased . Paranormal Study & Investigations (PSI-NC) from Morehead City investigated late September 2009 and Port City Paranormal’ s November 2009 evidence both support that theory. Random Electromagnetic field(EMF) ) spikes were noted around the northern end of the building as well as the basement area. A free floating energy field was noted by two teams, one apparently following a staff member for approximately 15 minutes. . Many of their high EMF readings were also associated with possible responses to questions and suggested the possibility of an “intelligently directed energy”. Several cold spots were detected and poltergeist-like activity (hair being stroked) were experienced by team members. The Port City Paranormal team found many of the same areas were active during our first investigation of the Webb. We placed multiple audio and video recorders throughout the building in the hope of gaining more evidence. One of our video recorders went down during the time of high activity. One recorder documented a light turning on in an empty room. That particular light had to be screwed into the socket to burn due to the lack of a switch. Things that go bump in the night! Some spirit communication was simple and clear while most were hard to discern. When asked” what was the color of the room when you were here? “ The response was “Yellow” ( The “C “room is currently sky blue ) The most interesting and disturbing moment was when a loud crash reverberated through the building. What the Heck was that? Did someone slam a heavy door? Doug and Steve ran towards the noise only to find a bicycle, previously propped against a wall had moved and was now wedged against the cellar door. It was now tight against the nob as if to block our entrance down into the basement. By the violent sound of the crash, we assume it had been thrown with force! Later as we discussed returning to study the cellar more carefully, electronic ringing filled the foyer area where we stood. After some searching, we located the sound coming from the lost and found basket under the main desk. At first we laughed when we saw the old calculator but why did it go off just then? “ That’s been in there for months and months.!” Sandy stated.” What we didn’t realize at the time was, we had been distracted by that event, we completely forgot to return to the basement . Was this intentional? Maybe. One more mystery! All buildings get cold at night, but at the Webb library the laws of physics are ignored. We all know heat rises to the upper floors in a building, warm layers rest on top of colder air, except at the Webb. Moving up the staircase, near the landing, we found a vertical line of different temperature zones. There were no drafts, the heat was not working, we could find no explanation for the phenomena.. How can it possibly be warm in one place and cold an inch further up the stairs? A team member described it, “ like walking through a door way.” The Webb Library has its own rules. We think the first rule is to never give up the secrets . Our teams agree that there are active spirits there, at least one man and one woman. The spirits that reside there deserve respect. There is also something a lot older here, something strong enough we smell it’s foul presents. An entity strong enough to move objects, interfere with mechanical devices ,touch us and speak to us from beyond. Port City Paranormal would like to thank the Webb Library, Sandy Bell, Haunted North Carolina, and the Paranormal Study & Investigations teams for their cooperation with research. We look forward to continued research on the library and gaining insight into the nature of the supernatural activities within the walls of this historic building. |
